Snow Warning: Heavy Snowfall Expected in Kashmir Due to Approaching Western Disturbance
Srinagar, February 11th: The biting cold of winter continues to grip the picturesque landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir, with temperatures plummeting below freezing across the region. Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a low of minus 4.7°C on Saturday, signaling the enduring grip of winter’s icy embrace.
According to a meteorological department official, the slight rise in temperature, marking a two-notch increase from the previous night’s minus 4.9°C, still falls significantly below the seasonal norm by 4.9°C for this time of the year.
The chill was equally palpable in Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, which recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.4°C, marking a deviation of 3.4°C from the usual.
Meanwhile, Pahalgam, nestled in the tranquil environs of south Kashmir, registered a low of minus 7.9°C, significantly below the expected temperature by 2.9°C for this time of year. Kokernag, another serene spot in south Kashmir, experienced a minimum temperature of minus 3.2°C, while Kupwara town in the northern reaches of the valley recorded a low of minus 4.3°C.
The famed skiing destination of Gulmarg, situated in north Kashmir, witnessed the mercury dropping to minus 6.5°C, inviting anticipation among winter sports enthusiasts.
Transitioning to the winter capital, Jammu, the temperature dipped to a minimum of 7.8°C, persisting below the seasonal average by 2.3°C. The chilly spell extended to other regions as well, with Banihal recording a low of 4.2°C, Batote at minus 0.3°C, and Bhaderwah at minus 0.6°C, according to the meteorological department.
Looking ahead, the forecast indicates dry weather prevailing until February 17, with occasional cloudy evenings anticipated around February 14.
However, from February 18 to 20, there is a possibility of light snow and rain, adding a touch of anticipation to the winter landscape.
As the 40-day harsh period of winter, known as ‘Chillai-Kalan’, concluded on January 29, Kashmir is currently enveloped in the 20-day-long winter period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’, which will last until February 19.
This will be followed by a 10-day-long period known as ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1, marking the gradual transition towards milder temperatures and the onset of spring.
